You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but unfortunately the Yamaha FZ6R has fallen subject to that unfair assessment by quite a few enthusiasts.

Introduced this year as an entry-level 600cc machine, the Yamadog comfortably slides under the FZ6S in the Yamaha sportbike lineup with a base MSRP of just $6,990. And that's affordable regardless of the economic situation.

Aimed at newbie riders and old dogs reentering the sport, this hot hootchie is easy to ride but not easily outgrown. Power comes from a tweaked R6S motor that makes tons of usable power from bottom to top with peak numbers ringing at 64.1 HP and 38 LB-FT at the tire. That translates into a versatile mill that's always eager to pull but never threatens to power wheelie. And as a little bonus it also gets an economical 46 MPG.

Other features include an adjustable handlebar and seat to suit different rider heights and a full fairing and windscreen to fend off the elements (and add some style).

Suspension and brake components are budget-minded and geared for commuting or cruising rather than backroad bombing. That's not to say the FZ6R isn't a handler, because it can make quick work of a twisty road, but wick-up the pace and the comfy suspension and budget brakes show their limits.

The FZ6R hits its mark perfectly as it strikes a balance between performance and practicality at an attractive price.

2nd opinion:
"Without being too much too soon, the FZ6R has enough gusto for the novice rider with room still left to grow. It will move quickly when you hammer the throttle and is nimble enough city streets and canyon rides. Although, it could definitely do without the pink Star Light, Star Bright graphics and insect like mirrors." - John
